Early Years
In his early years (seven years), Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) already by the images of warriors and Kabuki actors was fascinated. At age 14 he became a member of the Utagawa school success and was one of the many talented students in master Utagawa Toyokuni in I. After a laborious start with modest success, he found the subject of the Suikoden heroes, and his first impressions were an instant critical and commercial success.
Suikoden Series
Kuniyoshi predilection for heroic themes and issues in the first period of his career can be traced. Initially, his designs are very similar to martial Shuntei style (he was also known for its famous sumo prints), but that was the Suikoden series Kuniyoshi has escaped this influence. His prints Suikoden (also known as a hero of the Suikoden "108") in Oban format was inspired to adapt the author of a comprehensive Takizawa Bakin Chinese novel Shui-ho ch'uan heroic (in Japanese: Suikoden) in the 14 century written in the West as The Water Margin "means, tells the story of a gang of desperadoes in the 12th Century. These bandits living in the marshes near the Liangshan Mountain. Their leader was undaunted and Song Jiang clan was like a bloodthirsty "A-Team" fight against injustice and for the rights of the people.
Although not the first Kuniyoshi Ukiyo-e artist who worked on this issue, the great Hokusai, the book Shinpen Suikogaden (New Illustrated Edition of the Suikoden shown) in 1805, has exceeded its innovative interpretation, that of his predecessor. He described the Chinese "Hero" to the images a kind of supernatural influence the numbers presented in an ultra-dynamic. The protagonists were often tattooed with their strength and appearance of the terrible weapons in demand by the public Kuniyoshi more models (more than seventy adopted add!). Triptych
outstanding contribution to Kuniyoshi Japanese art is also found in his triptychs, warrior. The designs of these leaflets were so special because of its use in black masses. The three separate leaf display clear and dramatic untiy and show a general assessment of the possibilities of this format only rarely by the predecessors of Kuniyoshi. Every page of brochures such as Utamaro and Kiyonaga can also be seen as isolated images, but the greatest work of Kuniyoshi leaves are separated, the strength of the composition must be experienced.
Influence
When a master Kuniyoshi was himself, he has a large number of students as Yoshitora, Yoshimori, Yoshitsuya trained and Yoshikazu Yoshiiku. They all worked in a similar style and tradition as Kuniyoshi triptych design is not worthy of their master. But it was his most talented pupils Yoshitoshi developed a unique style of Western individual-oriented at the same level as his master. Yoshitoshi, a series about the heroes of Suikoden chuban composes of 50 prints that are darker in a darker tone and atmosphere. Kuniyoshi Suikoden drawings also had a decisive influence on the fashion of tattoos in Japan.
