Bilbo, the main character in the book, is a discrete character. The book follows Bilbo leaves it relatively quiet "hole" in agriculture and moves in the depths of Middle Earth to see a lot of dangerous creatures and circumstances.

As The Lord of the Rings is, the writing is full of songs and poems by an atmosphere of history and the reality that exists in many novels - they help shed light on the history, meetings, despite some of the dangers Bilbo.
Interestingly, many people have pointed out that this book and The Lord of the Rings Tolkien's war experiences, parallels, and pointing out the fact that, The Lord of the Rings (the successor) is written, it was while Tolkien was as a war history series for his son.
