How can you write a novel?
The first thing I do is decide the type and setting.
I guess you have seen a version of Back to the future. Here the landscape is changing because of the location, but because of the time. Flashing back or to the date of the amendments to the same place. The setting is new, right?
Genre writing is the kind of novel. This could be a Western, action, romance, detective, dreaming Mystery, Gothic, or what ever you decide to.
Science fiction is a different way
Have you noticed a change possible in the genre in a version of Back to the Future? The boy on the skateboard has changed into a Western gun totting. Well, it was still science fiction.
The setting is where the action takes place. If the action in this, you will not do much research to do on the duration of the action. However, if the story is set in 1850, 130 in British Columbia you need to research to do at this time, like in Back to the future.
Once you have decided which action must take place and how quickly you can build your character to define. Here are some points to be considered:
Names:
Is the name of each character in the shape of the location and time?
Do not call your Viking Raider, Joe.
Try to fool or as Eric.
Language:
What language is your character?
If he lived in London in 1750, this phrase would be used?
What would it look like?
This is at its class, is not it?
A shoemaker in London is not the same sound as the captain of the royal guard, he would have?
What the King himself?
How would he sound? What language would he use?
Here is a warning:
Please do not write a novel period if you have not prepared to acquire training and knowledge, you want to write it.
The key to good writing is about things to write you know and understand.
Of course, if you write science fiction, you can do whatever you darn please, as "true Rings" for the readers of science fiction.
Therefore, the advice is often given to writers, much in the genre in which they intend to read and write.
It is a way to get an education, right?
Dress
If you have met a man sealed in a silver suit and Walgreen, the antenna comes from a golden helmet, it looks like: This is not here!
When your character enters a bar Wild West in 1850, wore a green suit, you have declared to do. I would say he is Irish and is asking for a Guinness. Note: Guinness began in 1759, but I doubt you will find in the Wild West in 1850.
The clothes have to be compatible as the language is important. You need to know the local dress, not a stereotype, the dress was seen in a "B" movie.
The dress is also characteristic of appeal and class. A banker, a blacksmith, a mechanic, etc., are all different, dressed in the same position in the same period.
The first settlers of Texas, Arizona could be informed through their hats.
Other factors:
If your character is a nurse, you need something about how a nurse made against him and to know during his time.
You do not want someone to shoot a soldier with a Winchester during the War of 1812. Oliver Winchester was born in 1810th
Everyone needs a story. the story of a person determined, at least in part to its actions. You can never forget how a story in your novel, but you know.
Each character has properties. One can never mention, most of them, but you know. These are things that make your character in combination differs from all other labels in the world. Take, for example, Superman and Henry VIII
What matters is that everything must be consistent and logical, if you want to fly your novel.
If something is strange, you have some explaining to do.
How to Search
The best way to do your research by reading in your genre.
I do not read novels most. So I do research on date and place.
I would start with a map of the region. Then I would read the history of the region before the time. I read the history books, old newspaper articles, Internet articles, etc. I like the area and visit museums and visiting historical societies. , I like talking to people, especially the old hands to tell the important stories are.
Go to bookstores, garage sales, book sales, antique shops, antique shops and other places you can buy magazines and books for a song. Look what they sell in antique shops and questions about the history of the unusual products. The way you do that is to say: What is this thing?
In some ways it's a bit like a journalist. I love to look for old newspapers for interesting stories, what did other "journalists".
Look in old encyclopedias, catalogs and calendars. You'll be surprised what you learn.
When I wrote Revenge Mogollon Rim, I decided to read a novel by Zane Grey's, the parameters, which near my hometown in Arizona.
I knew something was Zane Grey, because I was a mentor and worked on exhibitions for the local museum.
I expected the reconstruction of his cabin where the fire was destroyed help Dude. However, I moved from the region (Payson, AZ) before the job was started.
Anyway, I read his book and mounted a sentence that does not seem right. It was a sight character saw the Mogollon Rim. I do not think he was right. I drove on the rim and parked near the place it describes. Then I saw that Zane Grey had the vision described perfectly. Mountains do not move so fast.
It is a good idea of you know, your position (set) and your characters before you start writing the novel. Well, not to stop. You can fill in the gaps later.
Just do not let some bold return your book.
