Treasure of Khan is the second novel by Clive Cussler I've read lately. The first was "Black Wind", a novel which I found somewhat amusing. So I guess what I did was here confirmed my opinion of Mr. Cussler or give him a second chance.
Yes. I gave Mr. Cussler a second chance to hang me with his character Dirk Pitt. I do not know how others feel, but for me it is the characters rather than the story itself - if there is a bonus when the story is a ripping yarn about.
Treasure of Khan begins in Hakata Bay, Japan in 1281 AD. From there, almost everything as a James Bond novel - in every sense. We get to Siberia, Russia, China, to visit Hawaii, Mongolia and even the mythical Xanadu. Most of the action is in Mongolia - a place where all the names for many vowels than consonants. For example, the capital Ulan Bator. Is that a mouthful or what?
In Mongolia, we meet a descendant of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan a lot. With a mean denying I will not, so I do not intend to the readers of this evil (such as - waste, which could otherwise only descent?) Use the vast resources of the Grand, Grande Bretagne (add more great "" ) Genghis Opa fund to ten a method of oil extraction. He won the lottery and expects a fortune by selling more oil to the Chinese, who desperately need it - Thanks to some other things he keeps doing on the road.
I noticed in the last novel, Clive Cussler has given his own name appeared briefly. It still does in this novel. What I like the idea. This is nothing more than a passing mention, but it is done professionally. It's a bit Hitchcockish.
Another thing, I could not help but have been several references to the AK-74 attacks. I do not know who reads proof plans of Mr. Cussler, but I think they missed. Although he heard the AK-47 - all terrorists halfway decent weapon of choice. There are other errors, such as:
"Like an oasis feed a herd of camels thirst ..."
You get a price for me to get the obvious error in the nine words quoted verbatim. Hmm, maybe I'm too picky!
Then there was the scene incredibly credible bear fight between UN Bikini was 20 years Pitt (Dirk girl our hero) and a medium, heavy, evil gangsters more than twice her age and twice his weight. Cussler description of the techniques used in this encounter so-called shiver me (Sidebar: I have 36 years experience in these areas). There is no way on God's green earth that it could happen. Absolutely ridiculous.
Overall, I thought the story was lame, the characters are fairly ordinary and extraordinary situations instead. I do not think I bothered to read more books by Clive. The characters are too woody for me. Cussler gallops and in the individual countries are often more than I visit the grocery store.
Treasure of Khan gets the note, but only - 5.5 of 10 points. I wanted it a 5.0 mark, but I learned some interesting things about earthquakes, especially the squid vague term. For anyone interested, it's the equivalent of the freshwater lake of Ocean tsunami and it is smaller.
See? You can always learn things in books that you do not particularly like.
