The overriding theme and goal In Praise of Shadows is very strong and convincing. China, Japan and much of Asia were in fact the "victims" of overwhelming Westernization. And to read this book makes one pause and think about some of the effects of westernization and colonization. Yet, although some observations are convincing Junichiro Tanizaki and strengthening the entire argument, the pieces of his writing can be irrational and poorly thought out. For example, if Tanizaki consider the phonograph and radio in the U.S., he says: "And if we had invented the phonograph and radio, how much more they can reproduce the special character of our voice and our music."
Although we must admit that the Japanese music and voice is terribly unique, it creates the illusion that the Americans invented the phonograph as a result of their special vote, when in reality we were pleased, new sound. When the Japanese invented the first, there is no doubt that the sound would have been the same. Of course, the style would probably be very different, further east outside, but it would probably sound the same as the U.S. phonograph and they were much happier. Similar observations can, as he introduced Western science versus oriental science when he says: "Suppose that [...] we developed our own physics and chemistry will be made." not the principles of physics and chemistry are universal? Later he confesses that "scientific questions, I do not know."
If he knows nothing of scientific issues, it would be more efficient than another example of physics and chemistry to use, because there are countless possibilities of military tactics, tools, textiles, for n 'to name a few. has, however, although several cases of faulty logic in his letter, I was moved by the book, and much was taken, that some consider the impact of westernization, many Asian countries unintended, had, I think that was his main goal. I came to think for myself, what would otherwise be different in Japan, China, Korea, etc. have if they had been before us in the modernization? Furthermore, how different America, Britain and Europe would have?
